Images labeled “Smash Mouths original editorial illustration” are original vector illustrations generated for this site. They are free to reuse with attribution to Smash Mouths.
When an article uses an image from Wikimedia Commons, its caption links to the Commons file page, where the creator and license are listed. The newsroom selects Public Domain, CC0, CC BY, and CC BY-SA images; each image’s own file page is the record of its specific reuse terms. Images with noncommercial or no-derivatives terms are excluded.
Image search uses the story headline and source excerpt to find related subjects. It keeps three different image files within an article and avoids reusing a file on another current or recent story during the previous 24 hours. When no suitable licensed photo is available, the site uses a distinct original illustration instead.
